Best Days of the Week for Facebook Posts

Over the last several years, social media has become widely accepted and more commonplace than perhaps originally thought. Today Facebook has over 1 billion members, although not all are active and engaged.

S&A staff are occasionally asked by clients what days of the week are best for posting updates on Facebook. Initial research indicated that weekends are best, since many people are blocked from using Facebook at work during the week. However, the initial research on that subject may have been too broad, lumping together different types of industries and organizations.

We recently read an article on prdaily.com that drilled deeper and recommended best days of the week for Facebook posts segmented by industry. In our minds, it makes sense that what works best for, say the automobile industry, might not work for travel and leisure.

The article and accompanying infographic from LynchpinSEO is based on a study that examined the days of the week that users interacted with various brands on Facebook. Interactions were defined as likes (79 percent of interactions), comments (15 percent) and shares (six percent).

Here are some of the highlights:

Technology – Mondays are best. This is one industry that seems to have bucked the “weekend is best for posting” trend.

General Retail – Mondays seem to have the most interactions.

Automotive – Weekends are best for posting.

Consumer Packaged Goods – Weekends and Wednesdays draw the most attention.

Publishing – People seem to like catching up on reading on the weekends.

Nonprofit – Weekends seem to work best.

Finance – Sundays draw the highest level of interaction.

Of course other factors come into play such as time of day, content of the posts, recent promotions in other media, etc. Each company should have its own customized social media plan that monitors interactions and adjusts Facebook posting schedules accordingly.
