S&A Communications is a fresh, new integrated marketing brand that grew from deep-seated PR roots and evolved into a team of strategic marketing professionals whose driving goal is to help our clients outthink, outwork and outperform their competition.

We’re brand boosters and client crusaders. We are different because of how we think, how we collaborate and how we achieve.

We often joke that we are a “young” 30-something. In reality, nothing could be more accurate. While we are the longest continuously operating integrated marketing firm here in our market, we would not have enjoyed the success we have without evolving (and in some cases, reinventing ourselves) along the way.

Our fearless leader, Ron Smith, APR, likes to joke that he started several new business ventures amid recessions – but not by choice. It’s a testament to his business savvy and adaptability that S&A continues to thrive in our region, and throughout North America.

After successful stints as a journalist, public information officer and public relations executive, Ron founded Smith & Associates in 1982 with only two employees. From the start, he focused on cutting through the clutter found at many large agencies in order to focus on a more customized approach to meeting each client’s needs. Indeed, our first client remains a client to this day.

In 1990, Ron seized the opportunity to print a new trade magazine and formed Cherokee Publishing. The new company launched Auto Remarketing, which today is the premier news media for the pre-owned vehicle industry, encompassing print and digital properties as well as webinars and several major trade conferences.

Chuck Norman, APR, joined Smith & Associates in 2003 following his tenure at the Cary Chamber of Commerce. As part of a new management structure announced in 2011, Chuck was named one of four owners/principals of the company, along with Smith and Bill Zadeits.

Smith & Associates and Cherokee Publishing merged in 2007 to form S&A Cherokee, a full-service communications firm.

To better reflect our scope of offerings, S&A Cherokee’s PR/marketing division was re-branded as S&A Communications in 2014. The company continues to offer award-winning public relations, creative, digital, photography and event planning services.
